A Few of My Favorite Things

There are plenty of things to hate when it comes to Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA). There is the pain, fatigue, and swelling. There are the medical expenses, the often-unpleasant treatments, and the long drives to receive them. There are the canceled plans, the missed work days, and opportunities just out of reach. There is the fear of what the next day, the next year, the next decade might bring. There are the fumbling fingers and knees that give out. There are the could-have-beens that are unique to each person with this disease. Yes, there is plenty to hate about RA!

Some tips to get through RA symptoms

In the midst of all that, the things that can bring us some comfort are like rays of sunlight through a murky darkness. I haven’t found anything that completely eliminates the gloom, but the streaks of sunshine are enough to keep me going, and to keep my hope for brighter days strong. So, with a little humor (because isn't a laugh even better than a pain pill?), here are a few of my favorite things when it comes to comfort for RA.

Sung to the tune of "My Favorite Things."

Warm gloves on cold hands and wool socks to match them

Comedy streaming to laugh when I feel grim

The looseness a muscle relaxer pill brings

These are a few of my favorite things.


Much-needed naps in a pile of pillows

A medflex card balance to use when I still owe

A lidocaine patch when the pain starts to sting

These are a few of my favorite things.


Calm yoga poses and gentle massages

Heated seat warmer hotter than garage is

An audiobook when my arm's in a sling

These are a few of my favorite things.


When RA flares

When fatigue strikes

When I'm feeling sad

I simply use some of my favorite things

And then I don't feeeeeeel [quite] so bad.
