Simple Tasks – A Public Awareness Campaign by the American College of Rheumatology

The American College of Rheumatology (ACR) supports a public awareness advocacy campaign for rheumatic diseases called Simple Tasks. The ACR is an international professional medical society that represents more than 9,000 rheumatologists and rheumatology health professionals around the world. The ACR’s mission is to advance rheumatology and advocates for the needs of those with rheumatic diseases and those who care for them.

The ACR launched Simple Tasks, a campaign to educate lawmakers, administration officials, think tanks, advocacy groups, physicians and physician groups on the importance of rheumatology, as well as to increase the understanding of the work of rheumatologists and lay a foundation of awareness that creates support for public policy that benefits rheumatologists, rheumatology professionals and those with rheumatic diseases.

Rheumatic diseases often strike people in the prime of life and can be crippling and life-changing. These diseases can make even the simplest tasks — such as eating, brushing your teeth and driving a car — impossible. Simple Tasks aims to increase the visibility of rheumatic diseases and of the specialists who treat them, and also to educate people about crucial issues such as appropriate and timely referrals, legislation ensuring access to rheumatologists, supporting research and initiatives to grow the workforce, and understanding the importance of the practice of rheumatology.

The ACR hopes that increased awareness of these conditions, and the specialists who treat them, will be beneficial in helping others recognize the value of rheumatology, understand the issues affecting this community, and make decisions that support rheumatology and patients with rheumatic diseases.

The Simple Tasks website includes numerous resources including articles, a newsroom, a blog, opportunities to share your story, search tools to find a rheumatologist, political advocacy information, and action materials with sample letters you can use to send to politicians. Their set of professionally produced videos are very helpful for understanding diseases and associated issues. I particularly found the following videos very informative:
