How do you cope with forgetfulness?

I am having serious problems with forgetfulness. I've done some research and most of the articles say it has to do with pain. Well, thankfully I really don't have chronic pain--yet. I just can't think clearly. My mind is a messy jumble and it's beginning to affect my work and personal life. I am currently taking Plaquenil. I was just diagnosed a few months ago. I hope someone has answers!

  1. Sorry to hear that you are having forgetfulness issues dawnvg. I don't know if you have heard of brain fog, but it is a real issue for many with RA. While, as you mention, pain can be associated with memory issues, when it comes to RA pain is not the only variable in cognitive issues. As this article from one of our contributors discusses, the impact of RA on mental functioning is not all in your head: https://rheumatoidarthritis.net/living/just-head-impact-ra-mental-functioning/. The article looks at some of the chemical and inflammatory issues that may be related to cognitive functioning.

As with any new symptom, this should be brought to the attention of your doctor. In all likelihood, your rheumatologist is familiar with brain fog. Working together, you may be able to find a treatment plan that will mitigate this effect. Wishing you the best and keep us posted on how you are doing. Richard (RheumatoidArthritis.net Team)
