How long do flares last? Am I in a flare?

I have just been diagnosed with RA. My energy level had decreased, but I have had a few days where I just cannot function because I am so tired and my hands hurt. Most time it lasts a day but one time three days. Is that a flare, or do flares last longer?

Flares can vary in length and severity for me. If I can catch it early and get a steroid shot, it can just last a day. If I don’t catch it early, or there is a delay in my shot (weekend onset), then it can last 3-5 days. The fatigue seems to take the longest to resolve. I echo the others: talk with your rheumatologist. He/she cannot read your mind, you have to communicate.
    Hoping you get relief soon.

Hi tjjemel. First, let me echo Casey’s thoughts that I’m sorry to hear about the diagnosis. However, it is good that you are being proactive in seeking information. Have you mentioned these flares to your doctor? As a new patient, your treatment may need to be adjusted if you feel your RA is not well controlled. In this article one of our contributors writes about a doctor who would not let him settle for the occasional flare: https://rheumatoidarthritis.net/living/the-good-doctor/. Of course, everyone’s RA is different and, thus, control is different. However, minimizing flares or their duration can minimize future RA related damage. Wishing you the best and know you are always welcome here for information and support. Richard (RheumatoidArthritis.net Team)

Hi, tijemel, thanks for your question. I’m so sorry to hear about your recent diagnosis, your pain, and your low energy levels. Please know we’re here for you through this, and we hope you’ll reach out whenever you need a friend. Flares can vary in duration and severity from person to person, and can evolve over time. It may take some time to determine what a flare is in your situation as you learn more about your new condition. However, I’ve found an article that you may be interested in that discusses what flares are and how to manage them, https://rheumatoidarthritis.net/living/dealing-with-flares/ The article also has some links to other great pieces on this subject as well! If you get a chance to check these out, let us know what you think! Please keep us posted on everything. We’re wishing you some serious relief soon! -Casey, RheumatoidArthritis.net Team
