Does methotrexate have to build up in your system?

I have been on methotrexate for three weeks and do not feel a difference.

I’ve been on Metho 20mg once a week for over 20 years with great results but about 2 months ago went from being in a stable state to a flare. Dr increased to 25mg plus from 1 to 2 Plaquenil a day about 6 weeks ago with no results to date. So interesting to see it takes time, I’m hoping….

Hi moom40. This article from our editorial team gives an overview of methotrexate: https://rheumatoidarthritis.net/treatment/methotrexate/. It notes that “It may take 3 to 6 weeks of treatment before you start to experience a therapeutic response to methotrexate, then up to 12 weeks or more for the full effect to be achieved.” Hope you are feeling better soon. @moom40 Methotrexate (MTX as the cool kids call it), does take time to build up in your system and it may take three months or more before you start to see results. Doctors may even want to combine it with other drugs if the results are not up to snuff. Don’t worry. 🙂 Keep on keepin’ on, DPM
