Could my symptoms be RA, or a different rheumatic disorder?

I’m 20 and haven’t been able to walk for 2 days now.

Hello everyone. My mother was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis a year ago. And two days ago, ankle joint of my left foot started to hurt like I’ve injured it. It was nothing too serious, I could walk easily. A day after, the pain became unbearable. It got swollen and I had almost zero chance to even move my foot. I went to rheumatologist today and he said there’s a big chance that it’s a rheumatic disorder but can’t tell if it’s rheumatoid arthritis as there are many types of rheumatism, so I’ll get blood tests and MRI. I don’t feel that my pain is specifically worse in mornings, it’s all the same during the day, and unbearable. And the swelling and pain is only on my left foot. My right foot is totally okay. Does it sound like rheumatoid arthritis? If not, what are these symptoms closest to, among rheumatic disorders? I’ve been feeling so low that I’m experiencing this at such a young age. I’m seeking for your answers. Thanks a lot.

    1. Hey ds098, thanks for reaching out!! I'm so sorry about your mom...And I hope everything works out for you. As Alesandra said, we cannot give medical advice so unfortunately you have to wait for your tests to show what is going on.

There are a lot of questions in the community about how genetics plays a role in this group of diseases so I thought you might like this article: https://rheumatoidarthritis.net/causes/genetic-factors-and-family-history/

RA runs through a lot of our community member's families while others are stand-alones. I personally have no history of autoimmune conditions but here I am with RA!

I know waiting for these tests is difficult so please reach out if you ever need to talk or have any questions. I really hope the tests provide some answers and hopefully help with your symptoms. Have you spoken to your doctor about something for immediate relief?

      All the best, Monica
