Can RA affect the jaw?

I've been experiencing jaw pain for a few weeks off and on. I've ruled out problems with my teeth and gums. The pain seems to be closer to my ear and I cannot open my mouth or move my jaw without sharp pain. The last 24 hours have been much more intense. Can this be RA or OA? I've got a call into my Rheumatologist but haven't heard back yet.

  1. HI Judimarie! I am sorry you are experiencing jaw pain. I wanted to tell you that while I can't diagnose what is going on with you, I know that many of our members have experienced RA-related jaw pain. Since your jaw has joints, it makes sense that RA could affect those joints. Here is some more information on jaw pain and RA that you might find interesting -- https://rheumatoidarthritis.net/living/jawbreaker/. Here is a little more information, too -- https://rheumatoidarthritis.net/living/jaw-pain-tmd/. I hope you get some relief very soon and I hope it helps you to know you are not alone in this. Best of luck! Best, Erin, RheumatoidArthritis.net Team Member.
