Dancing

I've had JRA (IRA?) since I was 10. I let it really control me, and defeat me all my life. I gained a lot of weight, and really allowed myself to be beaten, but I am now trying to get my life into my control. I'm weaning myself onto the mediterranean diet, and am looking for a fun exercise to do. I've never been a fan of exercise, and am looking for something fun to do to help me get my weight down, and improve my movements. I've always admired dances like hip-hop, jazz, zumba, salsa, and similar things like that. I'm currently in my last year of college, and my college allows me free classes at the gym. The dance classes they have are hip-hop and zumba. Would either of these dances work for arthritis? Has anyone tried these classes, and, if so, how did it go for you?

  1. Sorry, JIA not IRA

    1. HI Swareing! I think it's great that you are ready to start working on a more active lifestyle. In addition to any community feedback you may receive I thought I thought I would share some information with you. As you probably know, it's always good to check with your physician before starting any new exercise plan. While every individual is different, I know some members of our community have found different forms of gentle exercise quite helpful. Here is some information about exercises that you may try, should you and your doctor feel they are safe -- https://rheumatoidarthritis.net/exercise/. If you notice on the lefthand side of the article, there is a list of other physical activities. If you click on the words, it will lead you to articles with specific information on that exercise. It may give you a good place to start! As far as taking the dance-type aerobic classes, well, that is something only you can decide. I would suggest that if you go this route that you call any gyms and make sure they are using properly certified and trained instructors or, even better, see if they have trainers that are knowledgeable about conditions like RA. Good luck! Best, Erin, RheumatoidArthritis.net Team Member.
