Differing opinions on RA diagnosis from 2 doctors

I have been seeing a rheumatologist for 3 years, taking Remicade and Methotrexate. Earlier this year the Remicade stopped working. My doctor did labs and for all intents and purposes I should be remission according to them. An MRI of my hands showed erosions which he said still confirmed my RA diagnosis as well as my symptoms. He wanted to start me on orencia and then I had an insurance change. I saw a new doctor today and she said that according to my labs I'm in remission and have been for months that I don't need meds. She is running more labs and X-rays. That said, she thinks I have osteoarthritis and possibly lupus even though I've been tested for lupus several times and had negative ANA every time. I don't know what to think, she says I have no actual swollen joints, but my former rheumatologist has told me repeatedly I have swollen joints even though my SED rates are within normal range (high, but normal). I don't know what to think. I just hurt and want to know what's wrong. Has anyone else experienced anything like this?

  1. Sara, this is a really tricky situation. Perhaps the conversation you need to have with your doctor is about how you are feeling and quality of life versus what the tests say. Additionally, it may be a consideration that your SED rate is in high-normal range, suggesting the potential for a low-active disease or one that could reactivate. If you are hurting, then it seems this needs to be addressed in your treatment plan. Hope this helps. -Kelly (Site Moderator)
