Time for a biologic?

I was diagnosed with RA a few months ago and have been on methotrexate since with minimal result. My Dr. has broached the subject of Humira a couple of times, but to be honest, I'm scared of the stuff. The commercials alone scare the bejeepers out of me. Don't even get me started on $800 copay. Every month?!

That being said, I *am* willing to try if it really is time. But that is what I question. I've been on methotrexate for 3-4 months now and have read that it can take up to 6 to be effective. Is it really time to try more aggressive treatment or should I insist on waiting 2-3 more months? I am still symptomatic with painful swollen knuckles, etc.

Opinions? Suggestions?

  1. Hi,

I think I was on methotrexate for six months at a relatively high dose plus prednisone before I started Remicade. If I had felt I could wait longer I would have. The side effects of the biologic terrified me. When I did begin taking it though, the relief was so quick and helped so much that I was glad I had tried. Now almost two years since beginning to take it, it has stopped working. Not sure what I will do next , am trying wholistic options such as going gluten free and taking supplements but still definitely looking at what western meds have to offer because being in pain sucks. I'm not sure if that helps or not, but just letting you know that I did give it 6 months before I gave up and went to a biologic.

    1. Scott, many people find biologics to be effective treatment. If the methotrexate is not working, may be a good idea to discuss other options with your doctor. The quicker the disease can be controlled, the lesser the long term damage to your joints. Here's the page on biologics for more details: https://rheumatoidarthritis.net/treatment/biologics-treatment-options-for-ra/. Also, you should know that many of the drug companies will assist with copayments so the cost may not put it out of reach. Hope this helps! -Kelly (Site Moderator)
