Anyone tried Biqi?

Have had RA for a couple of years now. Was prescribed sulfasalazine which worked great for about 18 months and now not so much.

Was prescribed it as it was less detrimental to the immune system than methotrexate and my doc figured that this was a better option as I was being treated right at the start of the covid epidemic.

He is now suggesting to move to MTX but tbh I am not so keen. Am okish with sulfasalazine and ibuprofen but was wondering if any have tried biqi as it does look very promising and as far as I can see has less adverse side effects than MTX.

  1. Hi . I can't personally speak to the efficacy of Biqi and, unfortunately, there is not a lot of research, with controls, available. I did find this article which discusses the empirical evidence of long usage within Chinese culture, but the need for more "intensive basic and clinical studies:" https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2095809918306684. I do want to note that the study you cited found that Biqi with methotrexate was more effective than methotrexate alone. It also notes some limitations to the trial and calls for further research. That said, there are certainly people who have success with alternative treatments, but it is important to discuss with one's doctor before adding anything to a treatment regimen.
