Anyone use a diabetic or weight loss injection and have relief from RA?

I have read in several places that people with RA that have started one of the weight loss injections like Ozempic, Zepbound, or Saxenda, (semaglutide, tirzepatide, or liraglutide), have found immense relief from RA symptoms and some have even gone off their RA meds like methotrexate because of the fantastic anti-inflammatory properties. I've asked my rheumatologist about it, and he said he was unaware of any studies, so I believe it is anecdotal, but I'm definitely going to ask my GP about it at my upcoming appointment. I need to lose about 40lbs, which I know will help anyway, but I'd love to hear of anyone's experience with these prescriptions. Thanks in advance! 😀

  1. I haven't heard of that but I wish it was true! I have been on Mounjaro for 3 months and although I have lost 30+ pounds and my blood sugars are normal, I have not felt better as far as the RA goes. In fact, I feel that I am more tired and achy - not less.

    1. thanks so much for sharing your experience and feedback with . Congratulations on the 30+ weight loss and normal blood sugars. That is so great to hear! And yes, too bad that it hasn't also helped with your RA symptoms and pain. Are you taking some type of medication for the RA symptoms as well? -- Warmly, Christine (Team Member)

  2. Hi . There is some preliminary research, such as discussed in this article, pointing towards GLP-1 medications potentially helping RA with anti-inflammatory effects: https://resources.healthgrades.com/pro/the-potential-for-glp-1s-in-the-treatment-of-rheumatoid-arthritis. The article does point out that preliminary studies need to be verified through clinical trials. It will be interesting to see further results. Best, Richard (Team Member)
