are dental implants safe for us RA peeps

I broke my upper left canine which already had a crown. No tooth left.

  1. Hi, ! First off, I am so sorry you broke a tooth. I know dental issues and can a real pain (literally and figuratively). Dental implants *can* be safe for people with RA, but this would be a great topic to discuss with your rheumatologist and your dentist. If you are prone to infections or deal with other dental issues, it would be worth having a frank discussion with your dentist about what all your options are and what would be the best way to proceed for you and your dental and overall health.

I hope you are not experiencing any tooth pain right now and that you can get the situation rectified to your satisfaction very soon!

    1. Hi . First, let me echo everything Erin said. In fact, I want to ask if your dentist has you prophylactically take antibiotics before dental treatments/work? I know that many on immunosuppressant treatments are asked to do this to avoid certain infections, particularly those that can get into the blood from the dental work (my wife, Kelly Mack, is a contributor here and is one of those asked to pre-medicate). Your dentist or doctor should be able to provide additional information and whether this would apply to you. Best, Richard (RheumatoidArthritis.net Team)

      1. I have actually had my entire upper and lower set replaced because prednisone pretty much destroyed my teeth. It was a long and expensive process but I got 4 implants on bottom and 5 on top. Was it painful? Yes. Is it nice to have teeth again? Yes. So, for me, it was safe and actually preferred to the bacteria that was likely growing on my broken and jagged old teeth. Of course, always check with your physician first before doing anything major, but for me personally it worked out (for once). Keep on keepin’ on, DPM
