Has anyone used Buprenorphine?

My gp and I recently discussed my need for pain management specifically in my sacrum. I asked him about transdermal patch and this was his offering. He explained that at the extremely low dosage we discussed there was a low likelihood of developing an addiction. Nevertheless I have spent the last two nights sleepless over the possibility of addiction. I am terrified of the possibility. Someone help me sort this out please

  1. Hi mollie2018. Your concerns about addiction are understandable, but with proper guidance pain management is possible. While buprenorphine is used for pain, its primary usage is actually for addiction treatment - used as opioid substitution therapy. That said, it is an opioid derivative and can be addictive, but because it is an opioid receptor antagonist it does not have the psychotic effects of regular opioids - it cannot make a person high. Your doctor should be able to provide further details and guidance on how to avoid addiction/dependence. Every person is different and thus reacts differently to treatments. If you opt to pursue this treatment, your doctor should be able to advise you on things to look out for and monitor usage. Wishing you the best. Richard (RheumatoidArthritis.net Team)

    1. Thanks Richard. I consulted my pharmacist too who urged caution and I asked him about the possibility of a 5% lidocaine patch which is what I have decided to go with for now. I have been trying the large salonpas patches for a couple of days with very good success so I think it is worth a try. Wish me luck and thanks for all you do to help us make it through!

  2. You are very welcome molli. Know that this community is here for you and, if you like, please feel free to keep us posted on how you are doing. Best, Richard (RheumatoidArthritis.net Team)
