locking door latch/snib tips

I work in aged care support and have a client with severe RA. She has a security screen which she would like to be able to lock form the inside. The lock is a little latch/snib. Does anyone have any tips for how she could manage the latch/snib?

  1. Hi, ! I think it's great that you are thinking of your client! I am not sure if her screen door can have a new door latch mechanism placed, but there are different locking mechanism options. One is a flip type lock that only requires one hand to flip the mechanism up or down. I will include a link to what I am describing, but please know that I am not recommending shopping from any vendor in particular.

Here's another version of a flip style lock -- https://www.google.com/shopping/product/1?hl=en&q=screen+door+locks&prds=epd:7982683374164907543,eto:7982683374164907543_0,pid:7982683374164907543&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwik9pC-tev9AhVGj4kEHWj2DQUQ9pwGCAU

And here's yet another style of the flip lock -- https://www.acehardware.com/departments/hardware/door-hardware/door-latches/5573860?store=11296&gclid=CjwKCAjwiOCgBhAgEiwAjv5whFaOxaNBOtlG-SM6EOcBgCf9DS703mva_oiZZxKOsHIqKpgGeFphaxoCcCUQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds.

This is the only type of lock that I have personally used and found to be very easy to manipulate, but perhaps other community members will have some suggestions as well.

    I hope this helps!

    1. Sometimes, outside links don't work well, so you may have to copy and paste my link addresses into your search bar to view the results. Sorry about that, ! Best, Erin, RheumatoidArthritis.net Team Member.

      1. Thanks for the suggestions. It's a security style door so the latch is a bit different. This is the style of latch. She can lock it with a key aid, but would prefer not to use the key when locking from the inside, for safety reasons.

        1. Hi . You may want to look into a smart lock or touchscreen lock. There are numerous kinds and you may want to speak with a reputable locksmith as to what would be best (while still being reasonable) for this particular door. I can tell you that my wife, Kelly Mack (a contributor here), was diagnosed at age two, almost 45 years ago and can't really turn a key anymore. We opted for a touchpad combination lock. Wishing you the best and please feel free to ask further questions. Richard (RheumatoidArthritis.net Team)
