RA and Aromatase Inhibitors for breast cancer

Does anyone have experience with Aromatase Inhibitors(AIs) taken to prevent breast cancer recurrence with having RA. The side effects of AIs joint and muscle pain scare me away

  1. Hi . I can't personally speak to this issue, but there is research linking aromatase inhibitors to autoimmunity: https://www.scientificarchives.com/article/aromatase-inhibitors-and-their-connection-to-autoimmunity. Of particular note is that the study found the strongest connection to RA. In addition, this paper reports on three case studies of what may have been aromatase inhibitor induced RA: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/20621535/. The evidence is not overwhelming and it is important to discuss the risk with your doctors in relation to the risk of not taking the medication. Of course, each person needs to decide for themselves what medications are right for them. Wishing you the best. Richard (Team Member)

    1. Just wanted to add to Richard's great info that we also have a few articles on ASE over on our Advanced Breast Cancer site as well that are contributed by community members that might provide another point of view for you:

Hopefully both of our info is at least enough to get you started! As always, let us know if there's anything else we can do to help! Keep on keepin' on, DPM
