RA and colds and flu

Hi all I am newly diagnosed and on Methotrexate. Knowing the status of my immune system causes me great stress. I have a question. How do you deal with colds and flu? Do you take something or let it run it’s course or do you skip methotrexate dose and take over the counter meds. Thank you

  1. I think the move is to confer with your rheumatologist and see what they think is the best course of action. I know that's not the answer you were looking for, but it's really the only thing possible for your specific situation. For me, my rheumatologist would probably give me a z-pack or something but that's because after 20+ years together he knows me and my illness very well. Please let us know how it turns out and if there's anything else we can do. Keep on keepin' on, DPM

    1. I agree, contact your Rheumatologist, even on the weekend, when you first realize you are coming down with a cold, flu or Covid. In the past, my Rheum has had me stop my MTX and referred me to my PCP for influenza or Covid treatment. I have also been told to hold MTX for any infection requiring antibiotics. The length of time I held it varied, based on Rheum's opinion with the current infection. I do seem to get more infections when I am on both a biologic and MTX. I Hope for you to avoid those annoying bugs, Jo
