RA AND self-employed

Hi, looking for advise out there. I’m waiting to be seen by by the specialist to determine if I have RA. Experiencing Biceps tendinitis pain and bloods came back With strong rheumatoid factors and ANAs. I’ve fairly recently went into self employment and have no income protection plan set up….help! I’m totally freaking out and feel really stupid and guilty that I’m not going to get any real help with income
if I can’t work!

  1. Hi, if you are in the USA and you have stopped working because of your illness, you may be able to apply for SSDI disability. https://rheumatoidarthritis.net/resources-ssdi It is based on how many years you worked and paid in. It takes a few months and I'd probably recommend retaining a lawyer, they will help. You end up getting the back pay from the day you apply in one big check and the lawyer usually takes like 30-40% of that as a fee. The first step is definitely getting to the rheumatologist for confirmation of diagnosis and when you are there, make sure you tell them you just don't feel that you can work any longer safely and see what the doctor says. In the meantime, just know you are not alone! So many of us have been where you are and it is scary and overhwleming, but it is doable. We are also here to help however we can! Keep on keepin' on, DPM

  2. Hi . It is completely understandable that you are feeling this stress and, as most here know, stress does not do a body good. On top of the excellent information from Dan, I want to note that it is important to take one step at a time and prioritize your health. Getting a diagnosis, no matter what it may be, and starting treatment is paramount. The diagnosis is often an opportunity to begin to make things better. Treatments have improved dramatically in recent years and you may find that you are able to successfully continue with your business.

I in no way mean to downplay the concerns over the ability to work. As my friend Dan can attest, my wife, Kelly Mack (a contributor here), just this past week finished a lengthy fight for her disability retirement. By all means learn what you can about your options for if your ability to continue working is limited or halted. Just at the same time do everything you can to get the best treatment for you. Please feel free to keep us posted on how you are doing and ask additional questions. Best, Richard (Team Member)
