shoulder labrum tears

I was diagnosed with RA in 2016. The last 9 months or so I told my rheumatologist my shoulders are starting to hurt. My left shoulder got really bad. After going to my regular MD and going through home exercise and physical therapy they decided it was time for an MRI. The MRI revealed a small labrum tear in my shoulder and inflammation around the rotator cuff. I am experiencing intense pain that feels like my shoulder is tearing or coming out of the socket. I went to one orthopedic doctor that wanted to give me steroid injections. He said I have tendonopathy and would not operate on me. I am going to a second orthopedic doctor in the next few weeks. As I sit here writing this I can feel some of the same pains starting in my right shoulder and I am terrified. I don't know if I have been misdiagnosed or if RA can cause all of this. I had no injury to cause this that I am aware of. Has anyone experienced anything similar? Thank you

  1. Anita, thank you for taking the time to write here and share your concerns/experiences. I'm sorry you're in pain and dealing with shoulder issues. I've had shoulder pain before and it's not fun at all, so I feel for you. The best thing you can do is get a second opinion from another orthopedic surgeon. There are many doctors who won't operate, but there are others who have experience/knowledge on what to do. RA can cause a lot of things because of the inflammation and attack on the joints, but surrounding tissues. You are doing everything you need to do, stay the course and I hope you find some answers & a doctor who can help. Are you taking anything for the pain? Topicals worked wonders for me, but so did cortisone injections. Also, sleeping with a pillow under your arm at night to take the pressure off can help. -Effie, team member
