Typical Plaquenil Response Time

Hello, I was diagnosed with seronegative RA about 2.5 months ago and the doctor started me on a low dose (10mg) of Prednisone and 400mg of Plaquenil. It's been nearly 2 months and I haven't seen much improvement in the pain or inflammation in my hand. My question is, for those who have seen success with Plaquenil, how long did it take before you noticed results? I've read it can be anywhere from 1-3 months so I don't want to throw in the towel prematurely.

Thanks for the help!

  1. Hi . It can take up to three months, but I would think you would notice some improvement by now, especially since you are also taking prednisone. Has your doctor said how long you will stay on prednisone? Steroids can have some damaging long-term effects and you will likely need them whenever you flare. So, it's really not good to be on them for long. It sounds like it's time to talk with your doctor about alternatives. There are plenty of other medications for RA that might be more effective for you. Here is an article about RA treatments with links to more information: https://rheumatoidarthritis.net/treatment. It would be helpful to read up on your options so you can better advocate for yourself during your next appointment. Biologics are insanely expensive, but don't be discouraged if they prove to be your next best option. Most drug companies have financial assistance plans with generous guidelines that cover all or part of the cost. I hope this helps and that you get the relief you need and deserve. Best wishes. - Lori (Team Member)

    1. Hello I just wanted to follow up now almost 6 months later to see how you are doing...? Did you ever see any improvement with the Plaquenil? I was recently prescribed it as well. My doctor warned me that it does take time to work (which seems to be the case for anything for RA) but I'm not going to lie, I'm still impatient and trying to be hopeful. So, how have you been faring? I hope you've found some relief. Take care, Leanne (Team Member)

      1. Hi Leanne, I took the Plaquenil for about 3 months with no improvement so they switched me to Methotrexate. So far I’ve had limited success with that as well but along the way the doctors discovered I also have an immune deficiency which may be causing some of my joint issues. It’s definitely been a roller coaster but I’m confident eventually things will get much better. Best of luck with your treatment, Chris

        1. Thank you for getting back with me. Bummer that the Plaquenil didn't work for you. The human body is a complicated thing for sure. Sounds like you have a good mentality and I've found that makes a real difference. I hope your immune deficiency gets squared away and your mtx steps up its game. Take care of yourself! -Leanne (Team Member)
