Vaccines while on Pred

I’m on Pred and will be for awhile, if not forever. Not on anything else until July. My regular GP said since I am going on this important milestone trip in June I should get another Covid booster since I haven’t had one since last September and get pneumonia shot since my last one was about 15 years ago. Rheumy said Ok to both but said may not get full benefit. Not worried about the Covid one but am about this new pneumonia one. Anyone had it? Had it while on Pred? How did you react? I remember even 15 years ago that last one was nasty. Spent day after in bed. TIA

  1. Hi . I noticed that you mentioned you last had the pneumonia vaccine 15 years ago. The current version of the vaccine, the Prevnar 13, was licensed in the U.S. in 2010. It sounds like you had a previous vaccine, so you may not have a similar reaction. I can tell you that my wife, Kelly Mack (a contributor here) had the Prevnar 13 in 2022 and had no issues and did not go off of any of her medications for it, including her daily 5mg of prednisone. Of course, that does not mean that you might not have a reaction. I understand your concerns, as I happen to be a person who has had reactions in the past and even have to wear a MedAlert tag warning of my allergy to the tetanus shot. I have to wait at the medical facility for a while after any vaccine to make sure I don't have an issue. That said, I have managed o.k. with all of the recent vaccines, other than not feeling well for a day or two. Hoping this information helps. Wishing you the best in preparation for your trip.
