Are stress fractures in the feet common with RA?

I was diagnosed with RA earlier this year and have now had 2 bouts with stress fractures in my foot. Is this common with RA?

  1. Hi MelanieO! I am sorry you have been dealing with stress fractures recently. I know they can be unpleasant and frustrating to manage. Stress fractures and bone loss can be related to RA, for a few different reasons. Also, women with RA face an increased risk of osteoporosis. You can read more about it here -- https://rheumatoidarthritis.net/symptoms/fractures-and-bone-loss/. The article includes some tips to help combat bone loss and fractures, but please consult your doctor before adding any supplements (like Calcium and Vitamin D) to your regimen, for your safety. I hope this information is helpful for you and please know you do not face this alone! I know at least a few of our members have dealt with fractures and bone health issues. Best of luck and thank you for your question! Best, Erin, RheumatoidArthritis.net Team Member.

    1. Hi MelanieO. On top of the great information from Erin, I thought you might be interested in this article from our editorial team on Vitamin D and the role it can play in RA treatment: https://rheumatoidarthritis.net/natural-remedies/vitamin-d/. As Erin mentioned, always check with your doctor before adding anything to your regimen (there is such a thing as too much vitamin D). Best, Richard (RheumatoidArthritis.net Team)
