Can only cry

Ten years ago I went to the doctor because my hands hurt so bad and were so swollen I could barely bend them. The doctor started talking bout RA and doing blood work. I had no idea what RA was but learned quickly as my blood test came back positive.

I was taking plaquenil for about a year and then got scared it was affecting my vision and stopped it. Occasionally I’d wake up very sore and fatigue but nothing like the present. I woke up a few mornings ago unable to move my hands and unable to bend or straighten my knee. I can do nothing but cry in pain and now it’s in my shoulders and elbows. I don’t know what to do until I see the doctor.

Hi Corenna – Thank you so much for taking the time to share your story. As Andrew mentions, there are lots of other treatment options besides Plaquenil so I really hope that you will speak to your rheumatologist about them. Finding the right RA treatment can take time and patience, but it can really make a big difference in your quality of life when you find it! Best of luck to you!

Hi Corenna, thanks for stepping out and sharing your story. It sounds like you’ve had RA for ten years. Have you taken any treatments since stopping plaquenil? I do hope that you speak with your doctor about getting on some treatments that will slow down the progression of the disease and help you manage the pain. While you are waiting to see the doctor, you could call and ask for a prescription of a dose of prednisone steroids which will help knock down the pain and swelling temporarily. Hang in there and keep us posted.
