Azathioprine dosage per kilogram

Hi. I am currently on azathioprine treatment and have currently reached 200 mg and have been on this dose for 2 weeks. My blood work is good, so are my liver enzymes so far. My question is: since i weight 125 kg should i stay on 200 mg or go up to 250? I have read that 250 is the maximum cap, but also that the 1.5-2.5 mg/kg was thought for a 70 kg adult. Thank you!

  1. I’m glad your blood work and liver enzymes are holding steady so far. That’s definitely a good sign! Unfortunately, I can’t give medical advice or tell you whether to increase or adjust your dose. That’s something your prescribing doctor really needs to guide you on. Have you mentioned this to your doctor yet? -Latoya (Team Member)

  2. The thing is i am actually treating myself with azathioprine for an unknown autoimmune disease affecting the brain (i myself am a psychiatrist, so i can prescribe myself medication). I have done a lumbar puncture and has come back with increased proteins in my csf and slightly increased antibodies. The neurologist says the disease is rheumatological, but rheumatologists cannot specify a clear rheumatological disease causing this, so they left me unmedicated, though i do have neuro symptoms. Sorry for posting on a forum for rheumatoid arthritis, but i was really interested in the posology of azathioprine since the guidelines are not very clear on the dosage and i do not have clinical practice on this matter.
