Bleeding gums

I've been on Tofcitinib (Xeljanz) for a few years now and I've had bleeding gums for 2 years now. Have had dentist advice and cleaning. Use soft toothbrush and floss daily, no reduction in bleeding. Then I read RA meds can cause it. I'm sick of it, I've been told to just put up with it! Anyone out there had this issue and found anything that actually helps?

  1. Hi bigmaxx. Sorry you are having these gum issues. Your frustration is certainly understandable. As noted in this article, certain things related to RA, like Sjogren's syndrome, and some medications can contribute to periodontal disease: https://rheumatoidarthritis.net/living/oral-hygiene-protect-yourself-against-periodontal-disease/. The article offers some thoughts on protection. In addition, I can tell you my wife, Kelly Mack (a contributor here started a treatment earlier this year specifically designed to protect against periodontal disease and for gum protection. Your dentist should be able to advise on the various options available (Kelly's is called PerioProtect, but there certainly may be multiple options). Hoping you get some answers and relief soon. Best, Richard (RheumatoidArthritis.net Team)
