Can rheumatoid arthritis affect connective tissue?

My physio says I am stiff but I feel loose.. like my joints are sliding around too much..

  1. Hi there, thank you for reaching out. Connective tissue can be affected in those with RA. In addition to speaking with your doctor, this article may be helpful to you: https://rheumatoidarthritis.net/living/arthritis-awareness-mixed-connective-tissue-disorder/ Sorry for joint issues. Swelling and inflammation of the joints can manifest itself differently in different people. What may feel tight and stiff to one may fele loose to another. Joint pain and stiffness is one of the more common symptoms of RA: https://rheumatoidarthritis.net/symptoms/joints-swelling-tightness-or-stiffness/ Thank you for reaching out and being part of our community. Wishing you some relief soon. Kelly, Rheumatoidarthritis.net Team Member

    1. Hi kateshandshurt. Many only think of bones and joints in relation to RA, but in fact it is a systemic autoimmune condition that can attack, in addition to the skeletal, everything from to lungs to cardiovascular to the eyes.

The body's connective tissues are, unfortunately, also a prime target of RA. This article from one of our contributors examines, in detail, how RA attacks the connective tissues: https://rheumatoidarthritis.net/living/attack-on-connective-tissues/. The author notes "RA patients and doctors need to be aware of, and watchful of RA damage to cartilage, tendons, and ligaments. It can cause serious and debilitating destruction to the musculoskeletal system resulting in reduction of physical functioning, surgeries, and disability."

Fortunately, a treatment program designed with one's doctor to gain good control of RA, should also mitigate connective tissue issues. Hope this information is useful and know that you are always welcome here with questions. Best, Richard (RheumatoidArthritis.net Team)
