Digestive Problems

I've been recently diagnosed with RA, I had a gastric sleeve operation perhaps 6/7 years ago. Last year I had been experiencing gastric reflux, after a scope, I was put on an antireflux medication which has worked. BUT this year I have developed an even worse condition where I am unable to keep food down. I had another scope on Monday and according to my gastrologist, my GI tract is healthy. On Tuesday my rheumatologist increased my steriods from 7.5 mg to 20 mg, I am now able to keep my food down.
I am wondering it the vomiting has been due to RA has anyone had a similar experience? I look forward to getting your responses. Sharon13

  1. I have not experienced what you have had with vomiting but have had gastral upset and inflammation. I did find an article through the Arthritis Foundation that might be of interest to you. https://www.arthritis.org/health-wellness/about-arthritis/related-conditions/other-diseases/gastrointestinal-problems-ra
I would think that you would want to verify with your RA and even discuss with your Primary Care if there could be other issues that might cause such activity in your body though also, It's best to be safe then sorry, so to speak. I hope for you that steroids are a permanent fix for the current time and you can start feeling better again.

    1. Hi . The issue you describe is not one I have come across from other community members. That said, those with RA are more prone to GI issues (I actually came upon the same article posted). Also, many RA medications can cause gastro problems. I also want to note that corticosteroids are used to treat a number of conditions and, while prescribed for your RA, could be treating the cause of your G.I. issues. Of course, only a doctor can provide the proper diagnostics. Hoping you can get some answers soon and continued relief. Best, Richard (RheumatoidArthritis.net Team)
