I've recently been diagnosed with RA, and I know I have the MTHFR gene mutation. I am having trouble with medications and was wondering if anyone else is experiencing same problem or has any useful tips when dealing with these two things.
Hi . It is certainly understandable that you would be interested in fining out about any potential interaction issues. I have to be honest this is not something I was familiar with. It does look like those with a MTHFR mutation may be more susceptible to autoimmune conditions, but there are a couple of variants and how a person is impacted can depend on the variant (see here for more information: https://www.healthline.com/health/mthfr-gene). Because the MTHFR mutation can impact the absorption of folate there is information that it can effect how certain medications interact with the body. The primary one mentioned is methotrexate (see here for example: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/15361376/). Of course, only a doctor could assess whether your variant and any of your medications (and dosages) would interact and need any sort of treatment alteration. Best, Richard (Team Member)
