Does anyone fall asleep uncontrollably?

The thing is that especially at school (I'm at high school) I have problem with staying awake all the 45 minutes of the lesson. I just start to close my eyes and falling from my chair and writing nonsense lines in my exercise books. I can't stay awake even when I'm laying down and watching movie or reading a book, even if it's interesting for me and I'm not tired I suddenly fall asleep. But it's not as unpleasant as at school. Can somebody explain it to me? I already went to neurologist and she said I'm fine. One period I was thinking I have narcolepsy but I'm 90% sure it's not that.

  1. Hey Deamin! Thanks for reaching out and posting your question here to see. Extreme fatigue is quite common with an RA diagnosis. Here are some articles we have on the site about it: https://rheumatoidarthritis.net/?s=fatigue I'm hopeful that other community members who also seem to fall asleep at random throughout the day will chime in with their experiences for your insight. We can't give medical advice here, but I do encourage you to continue reaching out to your doctor about this concern. I also see that you're in high school. A reminder to check out and review our community rules regarding use of our site: https://rheumatoidarthritis.net/about-us/community-rules/ Thanks! Take care. - Alesandra (RheumatoidArthritis.net Team)

    1. Hi Deamin! As Alee said, EXTREME fatigue is common with RA. I know that I am entering a flare if my fatigue is off the charts. It's also a good idea to check in with your primary care MD to see if there might be a different cause. There are several different causes for this, but we tend to think RA. I used to have to take a nap everyday, but I rarely fall asleep randomly. Be sure to let your rheumatologist and primary care MD know. I wish you well.

      1. Hi Deamin,

Have you talked to your Rheumatologist about this? They might have some suggestions about how to help and/or have an alternative explanation for it.

I've experienced a lot of fatigue since having RA so I've done a lot of research about things I can do to help it such as sleeping at a consistent time each night, or drinking lots of water throughout the day, or eating less of certain types of foods, or exercising in the morning. There's many things you can try! But I also think it's important to check with your Rheumatologist.

        Best,

        1. Yes, I've also experienced falling asleep in school(okay some of those classes are boring). I had insomnia since I was young too. I hope that you get enough sleep.

Occasionally, I'd faint walking the mile home from elementary school because I had low blood sugar(Type 1 Diabetes). Make sure that you eat enough since non-Diabetics get low blood sugar also especially before meals.

I used to fall asleep in the car every week-end that we went to the city to shop, an hour away. I didn't know how to get to that city until I was in my 30's when I stayed awake once or twice. Keeping the a/c on low helps keep me awake when driving sometimes. I don't like a/c otherwise.

Some diseases definitely can be tiresome including RA. I was also dxd. with Microcytic Anemia due to having many years of chronic diseases. At the hospital, I was given a blood transfusion and a script for daily Elemental Iron.

As mentioned by the other kind Ladies, ask your Physicians to help you out, since there are many reasons for feeling sleepy. Good Luck!!
