I’m 19, could this be arthritis?

I’ve had both my hands and fingers like this since 13… and I’m starting to worry why am I getting arthritis at a very early young age. None of my family have had this.

  1. Hi, and welcome to the community!

First off, I think it's wise that you reached out. Secondly, I can't really diagnose you, for your safety. That said, there are a few causes of large knuckles and most of those causes are not a big deal and it's more of a cosmetic issue. You didn't mention any other issues, like pain or stiffness. Are you experiencing anything like that?

    1. Hi . Your concerns are certainly understandable. If you haven't already, you may want to speak to a rheumatologist. Besides having extensive training in systemic autoimmune conditions, like RA, they are also experts in the diagnosis and treatment of musculoskeletal conditions. This page offers more information: https://rheumatology.org/rheumatologist. Hoping you can get some answers soon. Best, Richard (Team Member)

    2. , I think Richard offered some good insight. I know that you may feel self concious about your knuckles, but that may just be how your body is built. Since you have a pretty slim frame, it might make some of your joints more prominent looking to you. I in no way want to minimize your concerns. But, I bet no one notices your hands as much as you do. That said, you have every right to feel confident and comfortable in your own skin.

You can always talk to a doctor about your hands, if you feel it's important to do so.
