New Diagnosis some questions re: Pinpoint Eyes

Hi everyone. I am 56 and developed seronegative inflammatory arthritis starting in July of last year a month or so after a moderna vaccine injection. It has developed rapidly since then. I am now seeing a rheumatologist and I am taking Prednisone 5mg daily and methotrexate 7.5mg weekly, although tomorrow i will start to take twice the dose 15mg weekly. I also take a blood pressure pill, stomach pill and 2 vitamin D tabs daily

My uncle asked me yesterday where my Pupils in my eyes went which i thought was a strange question but it appears that my pupils are very small almost like pinpoints, i did notice Friday morning when i grabbed my recycle that with the ice and the sunshine i could bearly see like i was very sensitive to the brightness. The don't get much bigger in a dark room.

Is this something that should concern me immediately or just tell the doctor on Monday. Could it be caused by the drugs or the arthritis itself it looks like it appeared between Thursday night and Friday morning, my eye didn't look like this prior to that although i can't say for sure since i didn't look at them prior and nobody mentioned them looking different. My CRP in a blood test on Wednesday was 5.8 it was 3.4 two weeks before but was taking prednisone at 15mg before that test. Most recent test has 5mg prednisone and 4 days of no prednisone.

  1. Hi . We are not medical experts, but if you are nervous or worried that your symptoms might worsen, it is always best to play it safe and see a doctor as soon as possible. Here is an article from Mayo Clinic about Miosis, which sounds like the condition you are describing: https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/symptoms/23575-eye-miosis. You'll see several potential causes listed that are worth considering. It might be wise to read this before you see your doctor so you can better advocate for yourself. I hope you get some answers and some relief. Keep us posted if you don't mind. I will be thinking of you. - Lori (Team Member)

    1. Hi . Pinpoint pupils can be caused by rheumatic conditions (see: https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/321209). Also, methotrexate can cause a number of eye issues, including photophobia. This article discusses ocular side effects of RA medications, including methotrexate: https://bmjophth.bmj.com/content/bmjophth/5/1/e000331.full.pdf. Of course, as said, we are not medical professionals, but your rheumatologist should be able to offer further information and, hopefully, the information we provided can help start a good conversation. Hoping you get some answers soon and feel free, if you like, to keep us posted on how things are going. Best, Richard (RheumatoidArthritis.net Team)
