RA and ILD (interstitial lung disease)

I would like information on the development of interstitial lung disease (ILD) in people with RA. I’ve had RA for 20+ years and have just been diagnosed with ILD. I’ve developed a frequent dry cough and get slightly winded on my normal walks. We’re on a wait and monitor program right now. I’m not sure what to expect.

  1. I have had rheumatoid arthritis for thirty plus years and I have to say, I feel like every time there is a post like this I am one of the people who answers “yes, me, I have that!” 😂 I have fibrosis in the lungs and the beginnings of ILD, apparently. It is very mild but now they are “watching it.” Believe it or not, and this is going to sound silly, but I sing all the time when I can and actually, that has helped to keep my lung capacity better and bigger. That’s what they told me, anyway, when they asked if I do breathing exercises - I said “yes!” I sing showtunes when I cook. I have no idea if that helps but either way just know, you are not alone. Keep on keepin’ on, DPM

    1. Thank you! My 'Me Too movement' is similar to yours. Thank you for the encouragement.

      1. Hi, ! I am sorry you're dealing with ILD on top of RA! Like you needed another health issue to deal with. Ugh.

Although ILD is pretty uncommon, we do have a number of members that have dealt with it and I wanted to share some of their information with you. Here's one conversation from our forums on the condition and what it can be like -- https://rheumatoidarthritis.net/forums/lung-issues. I know anything with the words "lung" and "disease" can be pretty scary, but please know we have a community of folks that can relate and support you as you deal with this new diagnosis.

        1. Thank you so much! It's so difficult to find information elsewhere.
