RA Diagnosis(or not)

Hi all,
Just joined this site so please forgive the length of this post regarding my story thus far.
I am a bricklayer in my late 50ish and up to the end of last year have always been in good health.Just after xmas i went into the garden to do something trvial and my right hand started hurting for ‘no reason’.The following day the pain was gone but,my right hand started hurting.Again it went the following day.A few days later the left hand swelled up.The following day the swelling had gone but,the right hand was swollen. After taking ibrufen the swelling went after a few days.I went to work in the new year and my right hand ached for a few days then on the Friday the pain was unbearable. It was at this point i knew i had to go to the doctors.I was sent to hospital for blood tests and x rays and given codine for the pain. After a week the codine had not helped at all.During this time one day my right hand swelled up,the following day it had gone down but the other hand was swollen, the following day both hands were swollen and my left shoulder.I went back to the doctors being my symptoms had become worse.I was told my x rays showed no arthritis in any of my hands\fingers and that my uric level was fine so i had no gout but my blood marker was slightly raised.Other than that my blood tests were pretty normaI.I was given naproxen on repeat(and a tablet for stomach lining)and reffered to the rheumatoid department at a hospital. The hospital has written to me and said i have been ‘graded’ as urgent but, there is an approx 20 week wait! I am not in a position to go private. So i’m trying to gets a heads up while i wait.During the few months this has been going on,on two seperate occaisions at night i have had a huge pain in my left side rib area, almost as of it was a heart attack. One night i woke and my bed was drenched from top to bottom, throught to the quilt/matress/pillows and my ears seem to be ringing all the time. Not sure if any of these are connected but nothing has ever happened before since the first swelling in December so i’m guessing connected.Just last night i started watching a film,my left shoulder started aching,2 hours later it was very very painful(but no swelling) and i hardly managed to sleep.
The only thing the doctor would commit to was that i have ‘An inflammatory arthritis’.
So being he has ruled out a couple of things and referred me to a rheumatoid specialist………..i guess i can assume he believes i have RA.
Now i guess many who read this will be nodding or will tell me these are similar to their own RA symptoms but…….
My question to the board is……
Is there anyone here who actually has a different opinion regarding my waiting diagnosis. It would like to know what i am facing.

Kind regards.

  1. Hi . That is a horribly long wait when you have progressing symptoms. I wish you could get in sooner. We are not medical experts, so we really can't weigh in with opinions as to a possible diagnosis, but I can tell you that your symptoms are common to several different inflammatory diseases, including RA. Only a rheumatologist can tell you more. In the meantime, if ever your symptoms progress to a point where you are concerned for your safety or your pain is unbearable, please go to the ER. If nothing else, they will treat your symptoms and ensure that you are not in any danger. Please keep us posted if you don't mind and feel free to post here whenever you need support or a place to vent. Thinking of you and wishing you the very best. - Lori (Team Member)

    1. Thankyou for taking the time to reply.
Yes i am indeed in the UK.

I did forget to mention in my post that,i have been given an appointment at a nearby surgery to have an ultrasound on both my hands and wrists if that has any bearing on matters.I don’t suppose i’ll get any answers on the day.Probably i’ll be told “Your doctor will be sent the results”.

      Thankyou again.

      1. I am glad to hear you will be getting the ultrasound! It was through hand and wrist ultrasounds that my RA diagnosis was finally confirmed. It even convinced the Rheumatologist who had told me for a year "I disagree with your symptoms" and allowed me to get into an excellent Rheumatologist who started my treatment immediately! I Hope the ultrasound is able to speed up your diagnosis (RA or otherwise) and intiate treatment soon, Jo
