Relieving pain without NSAIDS

I’m on Xarelto, a blood thinner, and cannot take anti inflammatories. I also cannot take Tylenol because it elevates my liver enzymes. I’m aware of diet, exercise, cold packs, warm shower in the morning, etc. Any suggestions for pain relief that doesn’t involve NSAIDS or Tylenol?

  1. Great question! I’m also limited. I miss Tylenol because it actually worked well for me some days. I have Tramadol, but don’t find it very helpful. I’ve had some relief with acupuncture and massage. My goal is better overall RD control - but that’s been tricky! Jo

    1. I have not found great alternatives. Here are some I have tried with varying degrees of success.

      Prescription:

Lidocaine. I had limited relief with lidocaine cream and patches. When they work, they work great, but when they don't, it seems hopeless.

      OTC:

Bromelain, it never worked for me others swear by it.

Capsaicin cream, I had good results with this cream, so long as it the pain area is limited to small joints. In my case my hands.

Glucosamine, it never worked for me but again some people swear by it.

Turmeric, I have not seen any claims about this lately and it never ever worked for me, but I know years ago people swore by it. I would consider that the last option.

      1. Hi . My understanding is that over the counter anti-inflammatories, such as ibuprofen, are contra-indicated with Xarelto because of the blood-thinning qualities. Mind if I ask if you are on any other medications, such as Disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (DMARDs) to control your RA? I ask because DMARDs, such as methotrexate and biologics and not contra-indicated with Xarelto. I know these are not pain relievers, but the hope is that if the RA is better controlled the pain will be also. Another item I have seen mentioned is capsaicin, which has been found to not hinder coagulation. Of course, it is important to check with your doctor before adding anything to a treatment regimen. Hoping you can get some relief. Best, Richard (RheumatoidArthritis.net Team)

        1. Just throwing a couple of things out there that others have not mentioned.
Tens Unit, CBD oil/gummies, deep heat message. Combining some of the items stated? We are all so different... Hope you find something suggested by anyone will help. I miss my NSAIDS
