Does this sound like RA or a combo of RA and other issues?

I am a 60 year old female. About two-and-a-half months ago I started having pains in the balls of both feet and all my toes-sometimes sharp stabbing pains in my toes. About a month later I woke up with painful stiff swollen hands and fingers (both hands) also occasionally with sharp stabbing pains in fingers. I went to my family doctor who suspected RA and sent me for blood tests. Some of the results are as follows: Rheumatoid factor 387 IU/mL, ESR sed rate 67 mm/Hr, C-reactive protein 3.8 mg/dL, ANA screen positive, ANA titer 1:160, ANA pattern by IFA homogeneous, RNP Antibody positive, RNP Antibody units 239 U/mL, Other antibody (SS- SS-B, Smith, Scleroderma IgG, Jo1, Centrome, Histone) results negative. Does this sound like RA and Lupus? Of course, I am going to go to a Rheumatologist but appt. is 6 weeks away. Does anyone have any advice on what to do until my Rheumatologist appt? Would appreciate any info and advice and support. Thank you.

  1. Hi thanksforinfo. It is good to hear that you are seeing a rheumatologist. For your protection, we cannot give medical advice over the internet and only a doctor can give you a proper diagnosis concerning RA and lupus. That said, you may be interested in this article from our editorial team on lupus and RA: Hopefully others with this experience can also provide insight. Best, Richard ( Team)

    1. I agree with Richard. You need to wait for your appointment with the rheumatologist before you try to guess what the results mean. In the meantime, there are some options you can try. Massage therapy can be very helpful. In addition, I take turmeric and find it helpful for inflammation. You can use the spice in veggie shakes, or take turmeric capsules that you find in health food stores. Make sure you are staying hydrated as well. I always feel worse when I forget to drink water. Try cold compresses alternating with warm compresses on your hands. I hope this helps. Hang in there and know that we are all here for you!
