Cramp-like Pain in Left Ribcage

I have experienced a sensation in my left rib muscles ever since my RA journey began. It feels like someone is twisting my muscles near my ribs with a pair of pliers. Anyone else experience this rib muscle cramping? P.S. It's not my heart...

  1. Hi . You are not alone in the community with struggling with chest/rib pain. There is a condition called costochondritis, which is inflammation and pain in the cartilage of the ribs and sternum. Our contributors have actually written quite a bit on the topic and here are a couple of items: https://rheumatoidarthritis.net/video/costochondritis-chest-pain and https://rheumatoidarthritis.net/living/sharp-poke-in-the-ribs. I can't say whether this is what you are experiencing, as only a doctor can do the proper diagnostics, but it is something you may want to bring up in a discussion with your doctor. Hoping you get some answers and relief soon. Best, Richard (RheumatoidArthritis.net Team)

    1. Hi, I know what you're talking about but I didn't know about the connection to RA until I came here. I have scoliosis (spinal curvatures) that was mega fused 47 yrs ago so I assumed the cramps had something to do with that & never bothered to mention them to the rheumatologist. After joining here, I found a wealth of information & lo and behold, here were symptoms that I had! I usually try to stretch out the cramps or alter how I'm moving to get rid of them. But underneath the skin & muscles, there can still be a soreness that seems to come from the ribs themselves. So yes, I hear you!
