Extreme and oppressive tiredness with Enbrel

I like Enbrel. It works for me and keeps RA symptoms at bay. However , I sometimes get him with an extreme and oppressive tiredness after taking (within an hour to a day). It’s not listed as a side effect but some folks have also endorsed this, though it seems rare.

Anyone else deal with this?

  1. hit not him

    1. Hi . I can't personally speak to this, but I am familiar with some patients who experience fatigue following the shot and know that some medical sites report it. For example this site notes that "Fatigue is a common symptom in patients with inflammatory immune diseases. Patients may also experience fatigue as an adverse drug reaction of biologics used for an immune-mediated inflammatory disease. This was reported by participants in the Dutch Biologic Monitor, a longitudinal observational cohort study using the Lareb Intensive Monitoring (LIM) system:" https://www.lareb.nl/en/news/fatigue-associated-with-biologics. It is important to bring any potential side effect to the attention of your doctor. Hopefully others will chime in with their experiences. Best, Richard (Team Member)

      1. I am 5 months on Enbel. Used auto injector for first 2 months - which failed several times, so dosage wasn't consistent and made switch to sure click. It works way better. Started taking on tuesdays - but with missed dosages was able to move injections to Sunday mornings, to give myself a day of grace for side effects if needed.
HOWEVER- sometimes I would have pain and itching at injection site for a couple days along with the fatigue starting late afternoon - but not always. Nothing super bad though. And seemed to be really hit or miss.
this last week I pulled dose out of frig the evening before, instead of 30-60 minutes before the morning of shot.
Surprisingly I didn't feel the injection at all, didn't get the pain, itching and realize now after reading your post - didn't have the fatigue.
There were times over the past few months I had the doses out of frig longer (we were traveling). So now I wonder if those were my other really good weeks without side effects - when the medicine was truly room temp.
Not sure what your process is but
I'm going to try taking doses out of frig at least 24th hours before for a few weeks and see if that continues to help.
If all else fails - we need to give ourselves some grace when we can. Good luck

        1. , thanks for sharing your Enbrel experience with and this community! I appreciate that you shared specific details that could be helpful (like the issue with the injector). I hope the refrigeration experiment yields positive results for you!

      2. Just as a FYI, https://www.enbrel.com/support/traveling-with-enbrel

ENBREL can be kept at room temperature, between 68°F and 77°F (20°C and 25°C) for up for 30 days. It cannot be put back in the refrigerator once it reaches room temperature, so keep this in mind when making travel plans. DO NOT use ENBREL that has been stored at room temperature after 30 days.

I am driving to Fla in a few weeks 1K mikes over 2 days and am concerned on how to keep the medication cool for the drive there and back. i have a few ideas tho'.

        1. I know this is a little late but I hope I caught you before you left. When I have to keep my meds cold you know what I found to be a great solution? Buy one of those large drink thermoses and then put the individual syringes in there with ice. That way it not only protects them but it keeps them chilled as well, and you can put a little but of balled up paper towel or something at the bottom to collect any liquid so it doesn't submerge the syringes if it all melts OR you can get one of those skinny cylinder freezer pack things. Hope this helps! Keep on keepin' on, DPM
