Humira injection side effects

My husband just started taking Humira. His first injection was Friday. His leg swelled, rash appeared, heat and itching. It did not go away or subside. In fact, the swelling is worse and spreading. The itching and heat is intense. Is this what they call normal injection sight side effects? He has appt w RA Dr Thursday but he will call tomorrow. I was just curious of others experience. It doesn’t seem right.

  1. He should call. We of course are not doctors and cannot diagnose even if we are. But it sort of sounds like it might be an injection reaction. Do call your doctor first thing. He might be allergic to an ingredient in the medication and there are other potential alternatives.

    1. Yes. He will call tomorrow. First thing. I don’t believe it’s normal. It’s not a swelling like you get when you get a shot. His thigh is now fully swollen and the swelling is growing. The itching intense. And the heat has to be about 105 degrees. Super intense heat.

      1. If his fever goes up or the itching is too much, do not be afraid to go to the ER. This sounds pretty intense.

    2. Thank you. I will keep a close watch on him. He has no fever. The heat is at the sight of swelling. He will be calling the dr tomorrow.

      1. yes please keep us updated! I know it's scary when someone close to us is going through an intense reaction. You're doing the right thing calling the doctor immediately and I hope that adds some clarity and all is well when you speak with them. - Reggie, RheumatoidArthritis.net team member

      2. Is there any chance he contaminated the needle of the autoinject pen? If so, I wonder if it's a bacterial form of cellulitis [though it really sounds like an allergy to one of the ingredients, as Rick pointed out.

    3. We will know more tomorrow. The swelling has gone down some. I’ll update afterwards. Thank you guys

      1. , thanks for the update! I hope the swelling continues to go down! Best, Erin, RheumatoidArthritis.net Team Member.

      2. Oh I am hoping the very best.
