Methotrexate Side Effects

I am wondering if any one in our community has suffered nose bleeds when taking methotrexate?
I have been on methotrexate before and have had other side effects.
However, my sister started getting nosebleeds when she took oral methotrexate and they got very severe when she was on methotrexate injections. My sister did not have a history of nose bleeds. Her rheumatologist discontinued the medication.

  1. Hi Lynn Marie Witt, when I was on methotrexate i did not have nose bleeds. I did have a serious rash, with burning itchiness when at the 6 month mark. I realize I had previous very small signs of this effects. I had an eyelid gel which I had use for a number of years that when I put it on it started to byrn my lids. So I stopped it. Then 2 months later, I had a couple small blisters on my abdomen, which I treated myself and they went away. As I previously said I never conected them to the methotrexate injection. Maybe the blisters a bit but thought it was my own fault but wasn't sure.
    Thank you

    1. thank you so much for reaching out. It is difficult sometimes knowing what causes what, with our bodies. Especially more so when we live with chronic conditions. However, medication side effects can definitely play a role in it all.
My sister's methotrexate has been discontinued. She is no longer thankfully getting the nosebleeds.
On a personal note I hope you are doing well. Always like when I hear from you. Appreciate you being part of our community and for always sharing your words of wisdom.

    2. Hi Lynn, I am glad your sister is finally off methotrexate and hope she has fund somethingelse that works better fir her.
I am doing good, hip is good as long as I don't move it the wrong way. About a week ago I was in the kitchen grooving to the music playing. Not long before I said time to go dancing., until! I moved the wrong and did a slight pivot on my new hip. That sure didn't go over very well. Pain, here you come. I guess that's why they say it take about up to a year for full recovery. I have now done 13 infusions and it is now into a routine. There are always little ussue that arise but we all deal with them routinely.
Thank you for your nice comments it is very much appreciated.

  2. Hi . It is great that your sister contacted her doctor and that the doctor immediately stopped the methotrexate. While it is not very common at the levels taken for RA, as noted in this and other articles, methotrexate can cause a drop in white blood cells/platelets leading to nose bleeds, bruising, trouble clotting ... (see: https://www.medbroadcast.com/drug/getdrug/methotrexate#:~:text=Bleeding%3A%20Methotrexate%20may%20cause%20a,doctor%20as%20soon%20as%20possible.) Have your sister's nose bleeds stopped? Best, Richard (RheumatoidArthritis.net Team)

    1. thank you Richard for the article. Yes once she stopped taking the methotrexate, her nosebleeds stopped. Thank you for asking! It means a lot. Just Keep Swimming...Lynn Marie, "RheumatoidArthritis.net Team Member"
