Pain and showering

Hi. I have had RA since 1977. Diagnosed correctly around 1982. Both total knee replacements. And many other surgeries. My upper body hurts constantly especially with this cold weather. I just started working this past April. I drive patients to our local cancer center. It’s a wonderful job for me. My biggest hurdle is getting my shower every morning before work. My fingers are quite crippled and most do not bend, they hurt constantly. Both of my shoulders and elbows are deeply involved with much pain. I am having a horrible time in the shower especially washing my underarms and lower body. I have purchased 3 different loofas with handles, but 2 are heavy for me to use. Does anyone have any suggestions on what type of bath supplies would be best. I’ve tried showering in the evening instead of morning but it’s the same situation with so much pain. Does Anyone experience this problem? Thank you so much.

  1. Hi . First, let me say how great it is that you drive patients to the cancer center. I suspect you will relate to this article from Kelly on feeling better by helping others: https://rheumatoidarthritis.net/living/feeling-better-by-helping-others.
Second, I noticed that you mentioned having both knees replaced. Do you happen to use a shower bench? In this article that compiled thoughts on tools, several mentioned how helpful a stool is: https://rheumatoidarthritis.net/living/community-share-devices-coping. I know this doesn't help with the arms and shoulders, so I want to suggest the bendable handle scrubbers (which maybe you have tried) to hopefully spare you some tough bending of your own. Hopefully others will chime in with their thoughts. Best, Richard (Team Member)
