Photosensitivity while on methotrexate

I recently had to find a new rheumatologist due to new insurance and I've only seen her once, hence no established rapport. I was on vacation a few weeks ago and was outside in the sun everyday. I used sunscreen but when I returned home, I noticed a red, bumpy, rash on my arms, legs and upper chest. It itches like crazy at times. My rheumatologist said to take benadryl and use OTC tropicals. I was already doing that with little relief. It's been over a week now. I'm sure it was related to my weekly methotrexate. I don't know if I should reach out to her again or call a dermatologist or what else to try. FYI, I also had to find a new PCP who I've also only seen once. Anybody experience this and what helped?

  1. Hi . I can tell you that my wife, Kelly Mack (a contributor here), had sun sensitivity issues with methotrexate, but not to the extent you describe. This article from our editorial team on the drug does list side effects consistent with your experience: https://rheumatoidarthritis.net/treatment/methotrexate. These are side effects that medical sites, such as this one from the Mayo Clinic (see: https://www.mayoclinic.org/drugs-supplements/methotrexate-oral-route/side-effects/drg-20084837), say may need medical attention and to see a doctor quickly. Your doctor may feel that the recommended treatment is sufficient, but if you feel your symptoms are not improving do not hesitate to seek further treatment. Hoping you get relief soon and please feel free to keep us posted on how you are doing. Best, Richard (RheumatoidArthritis.net Team)

    1. Thanks,. I got some Sarna lotion and it's calming down a bit!
