Rheumatoid Arthritis Flare possibly caused by Mounjaro

I am going on my 8th month (since October 2022) of a RA flareup and after NEVER missing a weekly Humira injection, reducing all inflammatory foods and taking anti-inflammatory supplements. I have seen my RA doctor several times, tried prednisone and methotrexate (at different times), no better. Switched last week from Humira injections to daily Rinvoq pills. It was about October 2022 when I started Mounjaro for weightloss. Anyone else had this issue? Any suggestions?

  1. I have been on just about every single medicine out there for RA and it took my doctor almost 20 years to find one that worked. Personally, I have had medications cause flare ups, I have had them work for a year and then stop working, and I have had them run out of supply and had to go off and when I went back on, they didn't work any more. The unpredictability of RA medication is one of the most difficult things to deal with, and I wish I could give you more concrete info but everyone's RA is different and sometimes there is just no reason. Let us know if there's anything else we can do and remember - you are not alone. Keep on keepin' on, DPM

    1. I am SO sorry it took 20 years for you and your doctor to finally find a med that worked for you. I am stunned...actually FLOORED by that span of time it took for you to find relief!!! That is EXTREMELY discouraging I must say. I was originally diagnosed in March of 2021. After the initial flare, I went a year without any issues. Another problem is, I had a great RA doctor that moved to another state. The doctor that I am with now (at the same practice) provides no suggestions, no options, very few words at all really, unless I prompt him. Just don't understand why healthcare has to be such a hassle these days. I appreciate your info and encouragement!

  2. I agree with Daniel. There is no way to effectively comment about the interaction of RA medications and other medications. I am a T1 and have many friends who use Mounjaro. i can make two comments. 1. in the diabetes Mounjaro has been deemed to be generally safe. It does have two back box warnings about Thyroid and Pancreatic issues. Which brings me to point 2. The thyroid can also be involved with RA.

Now i am not a medical doctor but it m be worth talking to your doctors about. Here is a link to an article about the thyroid and RA.
