Rinvoq and Diabetes

I have diabetes, and have been taking Rinvoq for about 3 weeks, and I have to keep lowering my insulin dosage. Has anyone had this happen to them?

  1. Hi . I can't personally speak to this issue, but I have seen multiple medical sites note that a person should tell their doctor they have diabetes before taking Rinvoq. Also, it is noted here that "If you have diabetes, it is important to monitor your blood sugar levels closely while taking Rinvoq. Check your blood sugar levels as directed by your doctor and report any changes to your doctor immediately:" https://www.nicerx.com/blog/rinvoq-side-effects/. Have you had a chance to speak with your doctor about this issue? Hoping you can get some answers soon. Best, Richard (RheumatoidArthritis.net Team)

    1. I have been searching for information about Rinvoq and low blood sugar. I have started and stopped Rinvoq many times because it makes me very tired. Every time I started Rinvoq my blood sugars would drop. This time I have been taking it for almost 2 months, and I take it before I go to bed because it makes me tired. And every night my blood sugars go low. The longer I take the Rinvoq the more I am lowering my insulin. I am working on readjusting my insulin all the time now, I hope there is a point that I'm done readjusting. The other problem is that I tell my RA doctor this and she says that the information about Rinvoq doesn't say it has an effect on insulin. Has anyone else had this problem?

      1. Richard gave some good input. I can’t speak personally on this either but perhaps keep bringing it up to your rheumatologist. I’ve had to do that on occasion for a couple of things too, until they finally listened and looked into it for me. Also, being this up to any other provider you see too. I hope things level out and you find an answer. -Effie, team member

    2. It’s intriguing that we can find warnings about discussing having diabetes with your doctor, but not what specific concerns there are with Rinvoq and diabetes. I think I would discuss it with your endocrinologist or whoever helps manage your diabetes. I am concerned about your low blood sugar at night as that can be quite dangerous. Do you wear a Continuous Glucose Monitor that can help you monitor trends and alarm if you go too low? Has your diet changed because of fatigue or eating less because you feel unwell? Can you add a bedtime snack to help keep you safer overnight?
Does Rinvoq help your RA symptoms?
On their own, RA and Diabetes are very tough to manage! I hope you can find just the right balance for you, Jo
