Sleeping with RA

I have such a hard time getting to sleep. Any pointers?

  1. Thanks for reaching out. Sleep is a struggle for many here in our community. I hope others chime in and share their personal experiences with you. In addition to speaking with your doctor, these articles on sleep tips may be helpful: https://rheumatoidarthritis.net/living-with-ra/ra-and-sleep and https://rheumatoidarthritis.net/living/quality-sleep-tips. 1. Oh the woes of not being able to sleep, I dislike being exhausted all the time. For me, I had to change a couple things prior to bedtime. No news, just something mindless like solitaire or doing dishes. Once I do make it to bed, I then pick a number, say between 1 and 30. I repeat this counting in my head, if my mind wanders I have to start all over again, continue and next thing I know it's morning! If this does not work for one of those odd nights, say after laying in bed for a half hour, I then get up and do something for a little bit, trying not to stress over not sleeping, I usually do dusting for it's quite, gets something accomplished and the family is undisturbed. Then try to back to bed. I find I have to change up my routine before bed once in a while, but try very hard not to and keep anything that last hour before bed to a very DULL activity. I hope you find relief soon.

      1. Those are some great strategies, . I'll have to try the counting thing. I have no trouble staying asleep, but I have a hard time falling asleep. Thanks for chiming in. Best wishes. - Lori (Team Member)

      2. i'm just the opposite. I wake up two hours after I go to bed, and after an hour of thrashing about -- I sleep like I'm on a rotisserie – I give up and get up. Ugh.

    2. That’s been my problem lately. Falling asleep. 😩

      1. I sleep a couple of hours and have to get out of the bed and get in a recliner. I have chronic pain along with RA and Fibro so I get about 4 hours of sleep a night

      2. That is definitely not enough, . I wish you could figure out how to get comfortable. Has your doctor been of any help? Thinking of you. - Lori (Team Member)

    3. I have had trouble in the past. I was diagnosed with RA earlier this year. I can’t specify why I had this bout of insomnia. I just couldn’t fall asleep. I have been in some pain during the day but not excruciating. 🤷🏻‍♀️I finally fell asleep last night. I just feel fatigued. 😩
