Can anyone explain severe lower leg swelling and pain?

Can anyone help explain severe lower leg swelling with severe pain to touch?

Good morning everyone 😊 I have RA and am flaring all over but leg swelling has been going on for over 2 months without explanation. GP has given me water pills which have helped a little. Any ideas? Also diagnosed with Sjogrens but taking meds for this when years ago my legs swelled but not to this point. And blood tests are normal! Going to see an internal medicine doc next week as no rhematologist here for a few months... argh! Thanks everyone 😊

  1. I am so sorry to hear you are in pain and dealing with swelling! Unfortunately, symptoms are a tough thing to figure out since they could result from medications or a byproduct of the RA itself.

Definitely talk to your internist and tell him/her what medications you are on, what blood tests have already been done and any other symptoms you are experiencing. They will be able to order more specialized tests to find the reason for the swelling.

All the best. I will be thinking of you. ~Monica (RheumatoidArthritis.net Team)

    1. Let me echo Monica's sentiments that sorry you are struggling with this issue and that, unfortunately, swelling like you describe could be from a number of issues. One of the first things your doctor will try to determine is whether the swelling is due to inflammation or water retention. From there, as Monica said, they will engage in a process of elimination and tests to point in the proper direction. Wishing you the best. Richard (RheumatoidArthritis.net Team)
