Inflammatory Arthritis

Just put on methotrexate. Anyone using methotrexate?

  1. Hi . Are you recently diagnosed. I ask because methotrexate is often an initial or early treatment for RA, as it has a long track record as a treatment and many in the community have used it. Our contributor Janeil wrote this article on what to expect: https://rheumatoidarthritis.net/living/what-to-expect-methotrexate. I can also tell you that my wife, Kelly Mack (a contributor here), was diagnosed at age two, 47 years ago with a very severe case. Through her childhood there were basically no effective treatments. Methotrexate was the first treatment that had any noticeable impact. She was on it for quite a number of years and it helped some, but once possible she was switched to biologic medications to get better control of her symptoms. While it wasn't sufficient for Kelly's case, it is for many (every case is different and what works for one may not for another). Hopefully others will chime in with their experiences. 2. Hello Richard, I was diagnosed with inflammatory arthritis recently. Still not sure what kind of arthritis. I have been waiting to see the Doctor. Was put on Methotrexate three weeks ago by the N.P. Has been frustrating. Denise

    1. Hi Denise (). The frustration is certainly understandable and it is good that you sought out a place you can get information and support. First, I want to share with you this article from our contributor Tamara on what to expect from your first rheumatologist appointment: https://rheumatoidarthritis.net/living/what-to-expect-at-your-first-rheumatologist-appointment. Also, here is an article from Kelly on questions for the doctor: https://rheumatoidarthritis.net/living/questions-for-the-doctor.
People here know how hard it is to be newly diagnosed or in the diagnostic process. Our contributors have written a number of articles for the newly diagnosed, such as this two part article from Kat: https://rheumatoidarthritis.net/living/support-new-diagnosis and https://rheumatoidarthritis.net/living/care-management.
I don't mean to inundate you with too many articles, just want to let you know that people here have been where you are and are here to help. The good news is that treatments have come a long way in recent years and a full and happy life is absolutely possible. Please feel free to keep us posted on how you are doing and to ask additional questions. Best, Richard (Team Member)
