Sore jaw

I have RA all over my body, but now have been having issues with my jaw, is this related to RA ?

  1. Hi . Unfortunately, yes, RA can definitely impact the jaw. As you've experienced elsewhere on your body, if there is a joint RA can effect it. Our patient leader Andrew wrote about how it effects the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) here: https://rheumatoidarthritis.net/living/jaw-pain-tmd and Wren wrote about her experience and what she does to try to relieve it here: https://rheumatoidarthritis.net/living/jawbreaker. Hope this information helps and don't hesitate to ask your doctor (or PT if you see one) about what might help. Best, Richard (Team Member)

    1. Yes, indeed. I have had multiple episodes where the hinge of my jaw was swollen and painful, to the point where my bite didn't line up. I've had it in my throat too (cricoarytenoid joints...I didn't even know I had!).

      1. Omg when you also said throat I have also had problems with my throat but thought it was something else, thank you for your reply

        1. , I just wanted to chime in and tell you that throat issues can also be linked to RA, as mentioned. Here's one article on the topic that I thought you might find interesting -- https://rheumatoidarthritis.net/living/a-hoarse-of-a-different-color.
