Symtoms

Hello I'm jo, I was diagnosed with RA about six years ago ,my mum has four kinds of athritis so I knew before then that I probably had it , but I'm still learning about it. About six months ago I got pea sized lumps under my skin and the most intense nerve pain on my skin like I had very bad sunburn, there was no rash ,it lasted about one month then started to ease off the lumps calmed down also . Now it's happening again already been about a month but not wearing off yet this time my smaller joints are hurting as well ,my question is could this nerve pain on my skin be a symptom of RA, I've looked on line it says yes but then it baffled me ,please can anyone answer this for me x

  1. Hi . Your symptoms do sound familiar. The lumps you describe sound a lot like nodules. This article from our editorial team gives an overview: https://rheumatoidarthritis.net/what-is-ra/ra-nodules. In addition, our contributor Tamara discusses her experience with them here: https://rheumatoidarthritis.net/living/rheumatoid-nodules.

The nerve pain on the skin you are feeling is a more complicated. It sounds like what a lot of people in the community who also have fibromyalgia have described. It is a condition that is comorbid with RA fairly regularly. This article gives an overview: https://rheumatoidarthritis.net/medical-conditions-occurring-along-with-ra/fibromyalgia. I do want to note that this article doesn't discuss that nerve pain feeling, but plenty of people describe it similar to the way you did. Of course, only a doctor can do the proper diagnostics. Hope you can get some answers and relief soon and that others chime in here with their experiences. Best, Richard (Team Member)
