Allergy

Has anyone with rheumatoid arthritis suddenly developed an allergy .

  1. I have not noticed developing an allergy after being diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis. I have noticed other medical conditions come up, however. I hope that others in the community will comment and share their experiences!

    1. Hi . I can tell you that my wife, Kelly Mack (a contributor here), has allergy issues that are believed to be connected to her RA. Her doctor has her on a daily allergy pill. Another contributor, David, wrote about his experience with seasonal allergies and the potential for a connection between them and RA and/or immunosuppressants: https://rheumatoidarthritis.net/living/seasonal-allergy-symptoms. Most of the research on the topic seems to be looking in the opposite causal connection - for whether allergies can be linked to an increased risk of RA. So, I don't know of any specific research finding sudden onset allergies. That, of course, doesn't mean it doesn't exist (my search was pretty cursory). Have you had a chance to ask your rheumatologist if they have seen other cases like yours? Best, Richard (Team Member)

      1. Hi,
I’m not sure if it’s an allergy but my eyelids are always puffy. And my eyes weep the more exhausted I get .
I’m on prednisone Rinvoc and Lefozimide plus celebrix
I’m in an extremely high flare and have been put on rest because my inflammation is affecting my heart.
It is so bad that the day after my blood work was done the dr called 6 times and finally told me I have to be in control of my flares
        That was last week.

        1. Hi . It is certainly understandable that the heart issues would be disturbing. Are your doctors, the cardiologist and rheumatologist, coordinating care? Also, has anyone discussed the potential heart related side effects of the various medications? As this overview of Rinvoq from our editorial team notes, it has a box warning on potentially severe heart issues: https://rheumatoidarthritis.net/treatment/rinvoq-upadacitinib. Celebrex and Arava (leflunomide) also have known potential heart related side effects. I'm not saying this is what is happening in your case (we are not medical professionals and only doctors can provide the proper diagnostics), but want to share the information. Hope this helps inform further discussions with your medical team. Best, Richard (Team Member)
