Biologics

I have been on oral MTX since my diagnosis in September 24. I have just recently switched to subcutaneous injection of MTX in the hope it will be more effective. My rheumatologist offered me biologics as an alternative but I am very hesitant due to increased risk of side effects and infections - especially for people with replacement joints - which I have after breaking my hip and then RA suddenly started. What experience have others had of biologics and should I try to avoid if possible?

  1. Hi, !

Apologies for not replying to your post earlier! It's pretty hard to cover all things biologics in a concise manner, but I will try to hit the basics. First, if you are hesitant to try biologics, you are not alone! They can come with some pretty hefty potential side effects, but they also can really help with RA symptoms. Keep communicating with your doctor and hopefully, he/she is open to listening to your concerns and addressing them.

Okay, so there are quite a few biologics to consider and you can read about them here -- https://rheumatoidarthritis.net/treatment/biologics. This information is not comprehensive, but it covers the bases. Second, when you talk to your rheumatologist, you may want to include some of these suggestions on what to ask -- https://rheumatoidarthritis.net/living/questions-ask-biologics. There are also a number of helpful community member comments at the end of the article. Also, here is one contributor's take on her experience with biologics -- https://rheumatoidarthritis.net/living/sick-or-in-pain. Again, it's hard to cover it all and I really hope other community members will see your question and chime in here. Just know that every person has a unique experience with treatment and what works well for one person may not work as well for another.

I do hope this information is a good starting place for you and gives you some ideas as to your next steps.

    Best, Erin, Team Member.
